Once you've received your crickets, what to do next? Leaving them in the shipper box is not the best approach to getting extended life for your crickets. We suggest pouring your crickets in a aquarium or rubber tote. If you are using a tote, it is a good idea to cut a whole in the lid and cover the hole with some type of window screening.
Crickets like to hide as a defense mechanism. So once the crickets have been poured into the aquarium or tote, you must give them housing. You can use egg flats or paper towel rolls are ideal. The crickets will hide and when it is time to feed your pet, simply shake some crickets off the flats or rolls. Generally, crickets will be content to just hide, but it is a good idea to run a line of vaseline near the top edge of your aquarium or tote. It is better to go with a little thicker line of vaseline than thinner. Vaseline creates too slippery of a surface, that crickets can't climb through or over.
Finally, let's highlight diet needs. Crickets by nature are scavengers, which means they will basically eat anything. You can use commercial cricket food are an ideal source. In fact, in the next couple of weeks we will be adding our cricket food on our website for purchase. When feeding crickets, a little food can go a long way. You can also supplement their diet with vegetables such as carrots. Also, crickets will need a water source. Typically, you should use a damp sponge or towel, which the crickets will suckle for water. Standing water isn't the best option because crickets can drown. They are not the smartest insects in the world.
Hope this information helps.
